ATIS transmissions are identified by a phonetic letter code spoken at both the beginning and the end of the message. This letter, often delivered as Information Alpha, Information Bravo, and so on, marks the edition of the information currently in effect. The start tells you which edition you’re listening to, and the end confirms that you’ve heard the same edition again, helping ensure you’re using the most current weather, runway, and procedures for that airport. Other identifiers like a call sign are used in controller communications, not for ATIS edition identification, and a time stamp or message type isn’t used for this purpose.
